- one of the reasons for the fear of the internet has the same cause as the Americans' belief that violence is rising when it's actually dropping...the media promotes stories of net danger
- the fear of the known - how to teach children what is wrong/bad
- more Baudrillard in lectures?
- control should be placed more on social networking sites... (facebook) pages made by individuals which bully others should be taken off by the Gov. and not completely owned by the person who created the page or by facebook
- drawing the line between virtual world & real world - not to let "virtual" world become/encompass one's real world
- policing is so important. people talk about freedom & the right to choose. just because someone makes a choice it doesn't make it a right one. we still have to distinguish right from wrong
- kids nowadays know so much more than we think
- I think teaching the fear of the stranger, "stranger danger" is an indirect way to teach young people to become aware of "strange" (dangerous) behaviour with the known, ie with the 80% stats of child predation being people they know
- if the majority of abuse, etc happens offline, I think that the majority of our time and resources should be devoted to preventing that (whilst still trying to stop Internet predation)
- Happy Birthday Sally!
- Education is the key...or, at the end of the day, trust NO-ONE!
- its a very topical argument that raises a lot of debate about whether the govt can police the internet, or whether that should be dealt with by the family entity. It is important to highlight that every circumstance differs but a collective idea needs to be established
- how parents are also being 'policed' - ie 'good' mothers/'bad' mothers depending on how they monitor their children's internet usage
